Selector Statement
Based on a 1965 field guide to Israeli plants, Kaffeman’s assemblage is a poetic introduction to the flora, geography, and history of Israel. Placed alongside quotes from the field guide, her glass plants and twigs reach into her motherland’s cultural practice of commemoration and mourning. Kaffeman uses the fragility of these pieces to engage with the precariousness of life in contemporary Israel and the preciousness of all lives, both Israeli and Palestinian.
